If a film wants to be glum it needs to overcome this with high quality elements and everything else here around Watts just isn’t up to scratch leaving the viewer with not much to care for and not much reason to suggest to anyone that this trip into sorrow is worth enduring. Without another fine turn from Watts this film would of been a real lost cause but thanks to her it remains watchable but highly forgettable. in Pinellas County nearly two years ago and at the very least the movie's interesting for the chance of spotting a familiar motel, bus stop or dive bar where these. in Pinellas County nearly two years ago and at the very least the movies interesting for the chance of spotting a familiar motel, bus stop or dive bar where these. Justin is such an overblown and overplayed part by Reedus that the films believability suffers for it and it’s a shame he was allowed to go so OTT, same could also be said for the films atrocious guitar tinged soundtrack. Melissa is a fine piece of acting by Watts that is somewhat matched by Dillon while poor old Reedus must be wondering if he will ever get a non Daryl role now. Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Laurie Collyer’s indie drama Sunlight Jr., starring Naomi Watts, Norman Reedus and Matt Dillon. We don’t really get why a kind person like Melissa loves an obvious drunk like Richie or why she would care for a redneck drug dealing fiend in the form of Justin and it makes her decisions through the journey harder to latch onto which is a shame as Watts again delivers here.Ĭreating a fine name for herself over many years now Watts must of taken a significant pay cut to appear in such a picture as this and it’s commendable that she would tackle a smaller scale picture that would only seem to exist to win awards for it’s actors. Release Date: Novem(limited)'Sunlight Jr.' spotlights hard-working convenience store clerk Melissa (Watts) and her disabled boyfriend, Richie (D. Many scenarios in the picture could hit home whether it be substance abuse, relationships, domestic violence or a raft of other tough issues but the film doesn’t seem to know what it’s saying and the arc struggles for it. is really bare bones stuff with Collyer seemingly more worried about what depressing thing will happen to these people next rather than creating something that really affects the viewer. The movie is a fine showcase for the well known talents of Naomi Watts and the arguable lesser recognized talents of Matt Dillon and also a warning bell that Norman Reedus needs to find himself a new agent faster than he can say “typecast”. Sometimes a movie is just to darn glum for its own good, an example that could be tailor made for Sherrybaby director Laurie Collyer’s raw and in the end mediocre 2013 effort Sunlight Jr. “So, do you think I can make an honest women out of you?” When they find out a baby is on the way it offers them a ray of hope even though Melissa’s ex Justin (Reedus) continues to pester them. Plot: Melissa (Watts) and Richie (Dillon) are a low income couple, with Melissa working at a dead end convenience store to make ends meet while the wheelchair bound Richie drinks his days away. Highly recommended if you don’t go to movies to be entertained.Cast: Naomi Watts, Matt Dillon, Norman Reedus But that’s a small quibble with a very good film. Currently you are able to watch 'Sunlight Jr. Surely by the age of forty-something, she would have worked her way into a better situation. If I had a bone to pick with this film, it would be that Watts seems too smart for her role. Neither actor plays for our sympathy and yet a situation that develops can’t help but break our hearts. This is about as good a portrait as I have seen of the new poor: the people in NICKED AND DIMED. Yes, they have it hard, but they almost never make a good decision. What makes the film succeed is that the portrait of their life is so nuanced. Here lives the future Melissas and Richies. Her mother (Harper) raises a houseful of foster children without much care or skill. They live in a dark motel room and scenes with Mel’s ex (a terrifically terrifying Norman Reedus) show that things have never been very good for her. Melissa works in a convenience store (SUNLIGHT JR) and Richie, a paraplegic due to a motorcycle accident many years earlier, does almost nothing. during the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday (April 20) in New York. Setting her film in sunny Florida only serves to emphasize the dark situation of Melissa and Richie in Collyer’s fine film, SUNLIGHT JR. Naomi Watts dolls up while attending the premiere of her new flick Sunlight Jr. Staring Naomi Watts, Matt Dillon, Norman Reedus, Tess Harper The Sunlight Jr is just that, a smaller version of a SunBox, perfect for your tabletop or desk.
